The Board's policy is to consider a candidate for examination only after he or she has completed a thoracic surgery residency approved by the Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery. Separate Written and Oral Examinations are held annually at times and places determined by the Board. Information regarding the dates and places of the examinations is published on this web site and in the Journals of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

The certification corresponds to a specialty within a recognized occupation. For example, Oncology Nurse and Pediatric Nurse are specialties within the nursing field, so Certified Oncology Nurse and Certified Pediatric Nurse would be classified as specialty certifications.
